Review: Maestro
Star rating:
4 (out of 5)
Where to watch:ย
USA: Netflix
UK: Netflix
Runtime:
2hr 9m
Director:
Bradley Cooper
Blurb:ย
Directed, co-written and starring Bradley Cooper, Maestro tells the story of legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and the tumultuous relationship he shares with Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).
The review (NO spoilers):
With a spectacular classical score and dedicated performances from Carey Mulligan and Bradley Cooper, Maestro is a surprisingly emotive biopic. I must confess, I knew nothing of Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) prior to watching this film, but that in itself is a testament to how well it makes us care about the protagonists.
Maestro feels rushed in parts, but of course, covering 50 years of a personโs life in just two hours is an impossible task โ which may be why Cooper (who co-wrote the film with Josh Singer) decided to focus more on Bernsteinโs relationship with his long-suffering wife Felicia (Mulligan), rather than the man himself. While a greater focus on Bernsteinโs other relationships wouldnโt have gone amiss, it might not have had the same emotional weight.
Thatโs not to say that the film starts off โslowโ, as the first half is full of energy, but it takes a while to feel the connection with the characters, which is something this filmโs success heavily relies on.
Of course, it would help to know more about Bernstein before watching the film, but it feels as though Cooper is assuming we already know key parts of his story. Perhaps Maestro is aimed at an audience with a keen interest in classical music (unlikely), or maybe heโs more famous in the US than the UK. Whatever the reason, once that connection is established, itโs easy to be swept up in the story.
The real star of this film is Mulligan, who Iโm sure will be nominated for Best Actress โ Iโd say she might even win (if it wasnโt for Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon). Cooper on the other handโฆ well, you only have to watch a short interview with the real Leonard Bernstein to see just how well Cooper adopts his voice and mannerisms for the role.
I believe any film that can elicit a strong emotional response from its audience (yes, I cried) deserves at least four stars. So, despite it being a slow burn, Maestro still manages to hit a high note.
